New partnership brings healthcare closer to students and addresses barriers to care.
Carlos Rosario School and La Clínica del Pueblo celebrated the opening of a new on-site mini health clinic at the School’s Harvard Street Campus on October 20. The clinic brings primary and preventive healthcare closer to students, helping address barriers such as cost, transportation, and limited time.
The initiative grew out of conversations with student government leaders, as students shared the difficult choices they faced between paying for medication and covering basic needs like food and rent.
“Students told us they could not pay for their medication; they were choosing to put food on the table and pay their rent instead,” said Allison R. Kokkoros, CEO of Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School. “It became crystal clear that we had to do more.”
The clinic will operate once a week, offering scheduled appointments and same-day visits. Students at the School’s Sonia Gutiérrez Campus will also be able to access telehealth services.
For La Clínica del Pueblo, which has served the Greater Washington, DC region for more than 40 years, the partnership reflects the importance of building trust and meeting people where they are.
“What makes this partnership special? Trust,” said Carlos Plazas, CEO of La Clínica del Pueblo.
The mini health clinic reflects Carlos Rosario School’s commitment to supporting students beyond the classroom. By connecting learners with healthcare resources, the School continues to advance its mission of helping adult learners achieve their educational and career goals while strengthening their well-being.
At Carlos Rosario, this is education, plus.
