News - Carlos Rosario School and MedStar Train DC’s Next Generation of Healthcare Workers

COABE highlights how the School’s Nurse Aide Training program helps students build careers and strengthens DC’s healthcare workforce.

The Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) featured Carlos Rosario School in its Fall 2026 Journal, highlighting how our Nurse Aide Training program and long-standing partnership with MedStar Washington Hospital Center prepare skilled healthcare workers for the region.

Nearly 20 years into this partnership, the results speak for themselves. Since 2020, more than 300 Carlos Rosario School students have trained on patient floors at MedStar Washington. Today, approximately 100 graduates work at the hospital, and 11 have become registered nurses. Nine out of 10 students who take the national nurse aide certification exam pass.

Graduate Madaly M. is one example of what is possible. After arriving from El Salvador as a beginner English learner, she progressed through the School’s English classes and completed Nurse Aide Training. Although MedStar initially had concerns about her English proficiency, her instructor, Doris Medina, advocated for her skills and readiness. Madaly went on to pursue her healthcare career.

The partnership continues to grow. In May 2026, four Carlos Rosario School graduates received MedStar Nurse’s Choice Awards, recognizing excellence in patient care, clinical skills, and teamwork. The School is also developing two new practice labs, supported in part by three hospital beds donated by MedStar Washington.

For students, the program offers a pathway to meaningful work, better earnings, and long-term career growth. This recognition also celebrates the dedication of our faculty and staff, whose support helps students turn their goals into opportunities.
