News - Meet Elbetel

From Uncertainty to a Clear Path

When Elbetel arrived in the United States from Ethiopia three years ago, she carried with her a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and experience working as a nurse. What she lacked was clarity about how to continue her career in a new country.

“I had no idea where to start or how to continue my career in a completely different system and culture,” Elbetel said.

Her initial goal was straightforward. She wanted to improve her English so she could communicate confidently in everyday life and professional settings. Enrolling at Carlos Rosario School became a turning point. “Looking back, enrolling at Carlos Rosario School is one of the most important decisions I have ever made,” she shared.

At Carlos Rosario School, Elbetel quickly realized she was not alone. Many of her classmates were navigating similar challenges, which helped her feel supported and understood. The School also became a gateway to her first job in the United States through a connection she made while enrolled.

The classes and teaching methods helped Elbetel strengthen her English skills and build confidence. She earned her Level 8 English certificate, which later fulfilled the English language requirement for university admission and opened the door to continuing her education.

Equally important was the career guidance she received. With support from career advisors Gabriella Woo and Gabriel Alvarez, Elbetel learned how to evaluate her academic credentials from Ethiopia, including her high school diploma and bachelor’s degree, and gained a clearer understanding of the pathways available to internationally trained nurses in the United States.

Together, they explored several options, including applying to take the registered nurse exam, enrolling in a master’s program, or returning to nursing school as a transfer student. After thoughtful consideration, Elbetel chose to return to nursing school to build a strong foundation for her long term goals. With the School’s support, she enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program at the University of the District of Columbia.

Today, Elbetel is a second-year nursing student at UDC. She completed the pre-nursing portion of the program with a 4.0 GPA and plans to begin the clinical phase next year. Along the way, Carlos Rosario School has continued to play an important role in her journey. She received a $1,000 scholarship from the School to help cover tuition costs and, with a reference from Mr. Le, secured a position at Children’s National Hospital.

“I didn’t fully understand how important references are in the U.S. job market,” Elbetel said. “I’m deeply grateful that someone believed in me.”

Reflecting on her experience, Elbetel says Carlos Rosario School gave her more than language skills. “The school did more than improve my English,” she said. “It gave me a community, a clear path forward, and the confidence to rebuild my career. Carlos Rosario School is where my new beginning took root.”
